International Center of Nano-Systems (ICNS)

The International Center of Nano-Systems (ICNS) is a joint facility of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics (MPI) in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM (FH-IWM). The focus of the ICNS is on research and development of energy efficient electronics beyond silicon.

Visitor Program

The strategy of the ICNS is to attract world-leading scientists as external Principal Investigators (PIs) for sabbaticals, summer breaks, and short visits with their accompanying Ph.D. students whose visits will be funded by the ICNS.

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) run by the MPI is integrated into the ICNS.

Scientific Goals of the ICNS

Development of

  1. energy-efficient devices for electronics beyond silicon,
  2. innately cognitive devices for brain-like computational devices,
  3. three-dimensional devices for powerful highly interconnected computational memory and logic architectures.
