A12: Synthesis and characterization of self-assembled oxide vertical interfaces

Atomic-scale fabrication of complex oxide-based interfaces provides a fascinating platform with many novel physical phenomena and functional properties for the next generation of solid-state device applications. However, extracting the desired properties from most horizontal interfaces is extremely challenging and is limited to a finite response. Here, we propose a new class of material system, a LaAlO3/LaBO3 nanocomposite (LABO), which has a unique structural formation in thin-film regime and multifunctionalities. The evolution of a self-assembled nanopillar structure within LABO films can enable the control of vertical heterointerface arrangements and therefore it can offer promising opportunities to extract a vast variety of functional properties such as resistance switching, exotic magnetic coupling effects, and photoelectric properties. In this project, we will extensively investigate the growth characteristics (e.g. growth kinetics and strain distribution along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions) of LABO nanocomposite films. The ultimate goal of this study will be to address a correlation between vertical interface architecture and the corresponding functional properties.
