A3: Atomic structure and local spectroscopy of complex oxidic structures
For future engineering of oxidic heterostructures the understanding of the interface-driven coupling between different oxides layers is highly needed. Central aspects of this project is therefore the determination of the specific atomic structure of complex oxide layers by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) in combination with exploration of the local electronic and ferroelectric properties. The latter will be imaged on nanometer scale by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). The project focuses on ultrathin films of transition metal oxides, especially also ferroelectric-ferrimagnetic oxide-oxide systems as well as multiferroic BiFeO3. The studies of local structure and spectroscopy will be complemented by the investigation of ferroelectric and magnetic domain structures, as they are accessible by PEEM and piezo-response atomic force microscopy (PFM).
