A9: Elastic control of magnetic order at oxide interfaces
The project aims at revealing interrelations of the magnetic ordering and the elastically deformed crystallographic lattices at coherently grown oxide interfaces. Thin epitaxial films and superlattices of complex oxides are grown in controlled strain states applying the method of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The modifications of the crystallographic structure and the magnetic order induced by epitaxial strain are measured and compared with fundamental theoretical models. While static strain is controlled by the choice of mismatching single-crystalline substrates, dynamic strain and a magnetoelectric response is achieved using piezoelectric substrates. The oxides being currently in the center of the project are SrRuO3, CoFe2O4 and manganites. The major experimental techniques utilized in this project are laser deposition (PLD), X-ray diffraction and absorption, magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy (MFM).
