B8: Stress and lattice dynamics of multiferroic systems
The project B8 combines complementary experimental and theoretical expertise to advance the understanding of the correlation between static interface stress and lattice dynamics of multiferroic systems. We employ high-resolution electron-energy loss spectroscopy to study lattice dynamics, crystal curvature measurements to measure interface and film stress and magnetoelastic coupling effects, and ab initio based theory for the theoretical description and understanding of these properties. This approach has presented new insights into the underlying coupling between lattice strain, stress, magnetoelasticity and lattice dynamics in the first funding period, where we focused on transition metal oxide monolayers and ferromagnetic layers. In the present funding period we extend our studies to multiferroic systems, where one component will be BaTiO3.
